Acenas thanks Safer River, Life Saver Foundation, Inc., BFAR for seeding tilapia fingerlings into Cagayan de Oro River

Councilor Caesar Ian Acenas, vice chairman of the Cagayan de Oro River Development Authority (CORDA) commended the Safer River, Life Saver foundation, Inc. and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for initiating activities highlighting the celebration of the Fish Conservation Week.

This morning, more than 10,000 tilapia fingerlings were seeded into the Cagayan de Oro River near the river taxi port at Zone 5, Carmen and along the Nazareth.

The Power learned that the activity is done every October.

In 2005, the BFAR, in cooperation with the Agricultural Productivity Office seeded 10,000 tilapia fingerlings were seeded at the river near Upper Balulang. Acenas thanked that BFAR for continuously supporting the fisherfolks even appealing to all residents near riverbanks to help maintain the cleanliness of the river. “Let us help give life to our river.. not only for tourist attraction but for giving source of livelihood to our fisherfolks,” Acenas said. The activity this morning was also participated in by the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Agricultural Productivity Office.

City fishery coordinator Reyna Pioquinto conducted a short briefing to the residents near the river taxi port, urging them to help in the campaign to preserve the river and how they can benefit from the project.

The residents helped in seeding the fingerlings.

Councilor Acenas is also the Chairman of the City Council Committees on Agricultural and fisheries and on environment.
